Are you focusing on cheap?30 Oct

An interesting article over at Insiders View today about Google launching a new comparison service for mortgages. While currently only in the US it appears it will only be a matter of time.  Now that was interesting enough, they also gave us another little snippet which I found more interesting and that was that:

According to Hitwise

Search terms with the word ‘cheap’ have decreased by 32% over the past year whilst searches with the word ‘compare’ have increased by 92%. Of course this doesn’t show that consumers are not looking for cheap deals anymore, what it shows is that they are confident that they are able to find cheap deals whilst comparing providers on a comparison site.

So at a time when lots of companies are gearing up for 2010, now could be good time to start reviewing those keyword lists and SEO tasks.  Are you focussing too much on cheap? And if so you could be wasting your time focussing on diminishing returns.

Tackling emerging markets with multilingual marketing26 Oct

The fact that the global economy has reached a somewhat stagnant state of late shouldn’t mean that businesses’ growth initiatives should stutter to a standstill too.

The need to proactively seek out new opportunities is as important as ever – if not more so – as companies must react to the economic conditions and find fresh ways of targeting new customers.

One way of doing this is through extending your scope beyond the English-speaking markets and targeting the 75% of the world that speak no English at all. This may seem like a daunting prospect, but tapping into new or emerging markets isn’t as tricky as it first seems…all that’s needed in the first instance is a foreign language website and a little online marketing savvy.

Online marketing is probably one of the most effective tools available to modern day business. It connects company with customer and facilitates the building of mutually beneficial relationships between the retailers and consumers of the world.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is now among the fastest growing marketing strategies, with 64% of European marketers indicating that they planned to increase their SEO spend in 2009. However, optimising a company’s domestic English-language website is one thing – launching a fully-optimised foreign language website is quite another.

A myriad of cultural and linguistic intricacies face those seeking to grow abroad. In the European Union (EU) there are 23 official languages spoken in the 27 member states. Although English is the most widely spoken, German has the most native speakers in the EU with almost 20%, followed closely by English, Italian and French.

Understanding the nuances within languages is crucial to the translation/localisation process. For example, the differences between French and German are obvious. But the differences between French in France and French in Switzerland or Belgium aren’t that obvious.

In France, déjeuner means ‘lunch’, but in Switzerland and Belgium it means ‘breakfast’. Additionally, dîner is ‘evening meal’ in France, but in Swiss and Belgian French the word is souper.

There are many such differences between the French dialects in France, Canada, Switzerland and Belgium which help to highlight the importance of properly localising your services for each specific target market. The same can also be said for German (Germany)/Swiss German, Portuguese (Portugal)/Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish (Spain)/Latin American Spanish and, closer to home, US/UK English.

Assuming you intend to adopt a fully localised marketing strategy, what are the practicalities involved in setting up a foreign language website?

First of all, you must establish a need for your service in a particular country. A good way of doing this is to check out the local competition. If there are similar organisations there already, that’s a good sign, as it demonstrates a genuine demand. However, be wary of too much competition, as a saturated marketplace can be difficult to penetrate.

SEO is central to any domestic online marketing campaign, and international markets are no different. You may already rank highly on Google for certain key search terms on Google UK, such as ‘Home loans’ or ‘accounting services’. However, when you have your website translated for your target market, it’s important NOT to translate the keywords directly: the correct dictionary translation may not be what people use to search for their product or service locally…they might use abbreviations, colloquialisms or a different word that means the same thing.

So in the same way as you identify your industry’s highest ranking keywords for the English market, such as via Google’s free keyword finder, you have to research the keywords for each target country, to ensure your foreign language website is properly optimised. Google has country-specific versions of its keyword tool and is an invaluable means of identifying the correct key search terms in your desired market.

These key phrases should then be incorporated into a professionally translated website to organically optimise its position in search engines.

Another point worth mentioning is that it’s actually possible to rise quicker in foreign search engine rankings, simply because the competition for key search terms is much less than on the English language internet.

And there you have it. A multilingual marketing and localisation strategy should underpin any attempt to enter new or emerging markets, with SEO playing a central role.

Speedie Notes.

This was not a paid for article but one we felt worthy of inclusion.  As well as foreign language markets overseas, there are other smaller pockets of foreign language opportunities within the UK.  Do you need finance or insurance content translated into Polish or German, or Japanese?

New Comparison Site Will Transform Health Insurance Market16 Oct

ActiveQuote, the UK’s first true price comparison website for private health insurance, has officially launched today. The site is expected to transform the way health cover is bought in the UK by making it much easier for consumers to shop around and for people who have never considered health insurance before to buy it for the first time.

The new, completely independent website, www.activequote.com, quotes all the leading UK health policies and allows consumers to buy instantly.

Richard Theo, Director of ActiveQuote, says: “For the first time ever, we’re offering people the chance to view the entire private health insurance market from the comfort of their own home and receive instant cover – all in a process that takes less than two minutes.”

After asking just a few quick and simple questions, ActiveQuote.com presents up to 75 health insurance quotes drawn from all the leading UK health policy providers. Unlike the usual price comparison sites which start with the cheapest option, ActiveQuote.com asks what you want to spend and starts by showing the best available options around that price.

Richard says: “The cheapest policy isn’t always the best – yet most comparison sites direct you to the cheapest. We don’t do this as we feel it is more responsible to show people the best available options within their budget, especially when dealing with something as critical as health insurance.”

People can tailor each quote according to their preference with an instant price update. For example they can adjust the excess, choose a different hospital list, select the most suitable discount scheme, add or remove dental cover and much more. Equally, they can refine their search by specifying which policy benefits are critical and, true to its ‘active’ name, the site automatically removes quotes that don’t match.

Richard adds: “ActiveQuote.com is for those people who want to get the best health insurance deal but simply haven’t the time to search the market by hand. It’s also perfect for those who aren‘t comfortable handing over large amounts of personal details to a stranger – you can get your quotes, compare and even purchase without ever needing to speak to anyone. On the other hand if you are the kind of person who appreciates personal advice on the phone, we have a team of advisors with more than 40 years experience of health insurance, ready to help.”

Unlike other health insurance comparison sites, www.activequote.com is an independent FSA Authorised Broker and is impartial.

Richard again: “We’re not biased towards any insurer, we have no vested interest, our only commitment is to the consumer.”

The launch of the site has come at the right time. ABI figures published earlier this year show that the number of people covered by private medical insurance continued to rise. In 2008, 6,224,000 people were covered by either personal or corporate PMI, an increase on 2007 of 3.7%. Also, a study in August by Lloyds Banking Group showed that 25% of directors are prepared to put an end to all forms of employee benefits.

Richard comments: “A large number of staff are losing the benefit of a company health insurance scheme and are faced with having to find their own policy. They need to protect their family and don’t want to get it wrong. ActiveQuote simplifies things, helping you quickly zone in on the option that’s right for you.”

ActiveQuote.com’s simplicity is also expected to open up the market for private medical insurance for people who were previously put off by its complexity. The site has many user-friendly features to make buying medical insurance easier. It offers a wealth of helpful information such as a database of medical conditions with advice about what to look for in a policy if you suffer from a particular condition.

Richard continues, “People simply don’t know enough about private healthcare. There’s lots of misinformation out there. For instance, many people who have a pre-existing condition wrongly assume that they won’t be able to get cover for it if they change insurer. They believe they are stuck with an often uncompetitive policy. Our site explodes these myths and makes private health insurance more accessible.”

Richard’s comments are supported by research undertaken earlier in the year by CS Healthcare. Its survey of 1,000 UK adults found that 40% worry about their health every day and when asked about private medical insurance, on average they believed it would cost around £50 per month; this compares with a starting price of just £7.50 per month on ActiveQuote.com

“Consumers tend to have a feel for other insurances; they know when a car insurance policy is right. But with medical insurance they often don’t know what they need. This inhibits them from looking for medical insurance in the first place. With our site, consumers can get quotes live from all leading UK insurers; immediately compare and tailor those quotes and buy one instantly online.”

October Insights 200914 Oct

Welcome to the October issue of Insights – Online Marketing ideas for Insurance and Mortgage Brokers. In this issue we will be looking at:

The five sites you can build with Wordpress to boost your Web presence

As well as being a fantastic tool for creating and deploying websites, Wordpress can be used to build a range of different website models by installing a running plugins. If you are not sure what a plugin in, it is basically a piece of code or group of web code that allows Wordpress to do “extra” things.

Some of these plugins are highly sophisticated and can turn a bog standard installation into something unrecognisable. Here are 5 types of sites you can build using Wordpress that can add revenue, traffic and generate increase exposure for you and your company.

  1. Review Site
  2. Directory Site
  3. Classified Ads Site
  4. Niche Article Directory Site
  5. Membership Site

Let’s look at each of these in turn.

A Review site
Using a plugin such as ReviewsPress or WP Review Site, you can turn Wordpress into a fully operational Review site that will allow visit to leave comments and rank anything want to. Having a review site creates interest and lots of user generated content on a topic that is complimentary to your business. Need some ideas?

Pet insurance – Dog / Cat Breed Reviews

Caravan, Car, Motorbike Insurance – Vehicle Reviews

Travel Insurance – Destination / Location / Local Attraction Reviews

You can then add your sponsored advertising around the site.

A Directory Site
Running a niche hand-picked directory can still be a worthwhile exercise. People still like “personal” recommendations and running a niche directory can be a good way to build content and interest. You can then use the site as a advertising medium to advertise your products and services using banners, button and text links so it looks like you are sponsoring the site.

Plugins such as: WP Directory Pro will give you a huge amount of added functionality for very little outlay.

A Classified Ads Site
Again a classified ads site complimentary to your niche could be a useful extra weapon in your traffic generation arsenal. Plugins such as ClassiPress or Another Wordpress Classifieds Plugin will give you ease of use.

Revenue models here could include adding paid premium listings so the site itself could make some extra income or you could simply allow anyone to post for free and add your own banners etc to the site.

A Niche Article Directory Site
You can simply use Wordpress to allow other site owners to distribute content on your new niche article directory site. In this way, both parties are getting benefits. They get links back to their site and you can valuable consistently added content to your website. There are also plugins available that will allow you to automatically pull in content from other article directories.

This works well if you are picky and chose the articles well and post them into relevant categories on your site. Don’t just rely on this source though, find other like minded site owners who submit article content and contact them to let them know about your service.

You would then add keyword links or ad banners to the site promoting your own products and services.

A Membership Site
Finally you can run a membership site. This would be a protected site that could only be accessed by registered users. Now this is normally used online as a paid membership training facility. People pay monthly to get access to use the site and download information.

In the Finance and Insurance space however, I see a different slant on this. A membership site could be used as a client retention tool. You could use it to offer registered users or “clients” access to discounts, other company offers or information that it is not readily available in the public domain.

Think of it as similar to those Voucher coupon books you would get when you used to take out a product or service. The different here is that you can easily add new offers, pull old ones and create something valuable to you and you customer base at very little cost. You can use Plugins such as WPWishList or Memberwing.
As you can see, Wordpress is very, very powerful indeed and hopefully this article has shown you that it is not just a blog platform or simply a content management system, it can be used to build a whole range of different sites.

Here is a quick list on the resources we recommend. If you are interested in us doing this for you please get in touch.

List of Useful Plugins
ReviewsPress or WP Review Site
WP Directory Pro
ClassiPress or Another Wordpress Classifieds Plugin
WPWishList or Memberwing

Finance Social Traffic Club
Our new free finance social traffic club was borne out of an idea we borrowed from a mastermind group I belonged to as a way of boosting the exposure of all our content efforts and to build a co-op of like minded members.

The site will only work if we all “muck” in. So even if you only stop by once a week for 5 minutes please “share” each other’s content around. I am recruiting hard and have contacted lots of finance and insurance companies worldwide and the service is by invitation only so hopefully we will attract best of breed around the world.

New Wordpress Themes Service
We are about to go live with our new range of Wordpress themes specifically designed for finance and insurance companies. We really LOVE Wordpress as it is a very low cost solution to create and manage your own website or a good way to have a website or mini site build to promote a specific product or service. To show our commitment we are about to launch Broker Themes – which you can “preview” at www.brokerthemes.com . Please don’t email me to say the buy buttons don’t work. We are working on them but we are excited to share our work.

Top 15 Ways to Build Your Subscriber List09 Oct

Email marketing can be profitable for any business, no matter what kind of product or service you are promoting. It is significantly cheaper than other advertising methods and it helps build credibility with your subscribers. As a result, you can generate more sales and profits.

The foundation for successful email marketing is a targeted, responsive and permission-based email list. If you have a list of subscribers that trust you and consider you an expert, you’ve completed the first step and are on your way!

Below you will several list-building ideas that will help you make the most of your email marketing efforts:

  1. Provide useful, relevant and unique content. Your visitors will not give you their email addresses just because they can subscribe to your newsletter free of charge. You have to provide unique and valuable information that will be useful to your subscribers.
  2. Add a subscription form to every page of your website. Make sure it stands out so it is easy to find. If appropriate, you can also include it in more than one place. For instance, your opt-in form might always appear in the top-left corner of your site, while you also include an opt-in at the bottom of some of your popular articles.
  3. Make it easy for your reader to sign up. The more information you request, the fewer people will opt-in. In most cases, a name and an email address should suffice. If it’s not necessary, don’t include it here. (Note: If you don’t have a Privacy Policy, put the words “privacy policy generator” into a search engine and you should be able to find a suitable form for your readers to review.
  4. Publish a Privacy Policy. Let your readers know that they can be confident you will not share their information with others. The easiest way to do this is to set up a Privacy Policy web page and provide the link to it below your opt-in form.
  5. Show your first issue or other sample to your visitors. This lets potential subscribers review your newsletter before they sign up to determine if it is something they’d be interested in.
  6. Archive past newsletter issues. A “library” of past newsletters is both appealing and useful to visitors and builds your credibility as an authority. In addition, if your articles are written with good SEO techniques in mind, they can send additional traffic to your web site through good search engine positioning.
  7. Contact other newsletter publishers. Introduce yourself and explore ways you may be able to help each other. Perhaps you can introduce other publisher’s newsletters or print articles they have written to your list, with a link to sign up. When you contact them, be sure to tell them why you think THEIR readers would like what you have to offer and why YOUR readers would benefit from their newsletters. This is a win-win scenario; both of you will build your lists faster.
  8. Give away bonuses subscribers can use. Create an opt-in bonus for joining your subscriber list. You can write an ebook or PDF report, or even hire a programmer to create downloadable or web-based software. But don’t limit yourself to only a gift for new opt-ins. Remind your readers that the next bonus is coming soon. People hate to miss out on things. If you systematically pass on “goodies” throughout the year, your subscribers are unlikely to leave.
  9. Ask your subscribers to pass it on. Word of mouth is a powerful viral technique that works great with email marketing. If your subscribers find the content you share with them to be informative, they will pass your newsletter on to their friends. This can be a good source of new subscribers.
  10. Let others reprint your newsletter as long as the content is not modified. Many webmasters and newsletter publishers are actively looking for high-quality content and, if they reprint your newsletter, you will get new subscribers, traffic and links pointing to your site.
  11. Include a “Sign Up” button in the newsletter. If you are using plain text instead of HTML, provide a text link to your subscription page. You may feel that this is not required because the subscriber is already on your list, but remember that readers will forward your newsletters to others, or reprint it online. You want to make it easy for them to subscribe.
  12. Add a squeeze page. A squeeze page has one goal ? to get an opt-in and build your list. Think of it like a mini-sales letter for your subscription or opt-in bonus. It features a powerful headline and a couple of very important benefits that should make subscribers salivate to sign up to your list. Once created, use a service such as WordTracker to find hundreds of targeted keywords, and advertise there using pay-per-click advertising from Google, MSN and Yahoo.
  13. Include testimonials on your squeeze page. This is crucial. Put 1 or 2 strong testimonials from satisfied subscribers on your squeeze page. This can be in any format, but you may find that multimedia (audio or video social proof) is more “believable”. To increase that believability, include full names, locations and/or urls; don’t use “Bob K, FL” as a testimonial name.
  14. Blog religiously. Blogging is a great way to communicate with your potential customers, and it creates a nice synergy with your email marketing. Be sure to include your newsletter sign-up form on each page of your blog. You can start a free blog at Blogger or Wordpress.
  15. Post on other blogs. Post great comments and information on similar blogs with a link to your squeeze or opt-in page. Also comment on others’ blogs through trackbacks. In most cases, your comments will be posted on their blogs with a link back to your site. This is an easy way to generate new traffic and subscribers.
