Keyword ideas for PPC and SEO – Car Dealers and Car Finance Lenders

This will be what we hope to be a start of an ongoing set of articles aimed at helping you come up with ideas for keywords based on data.

With the help of Google Trends and think with Google, we wanted to share some ideas to help you drive more traffic at a lower cost. Most businesses will probably have a short list of main target keywords, as they will be driving the most traffic and are considered to be the most relevant. But simply relying on these could be:

  • costing you a lot of money
  • could be creating a risk if someone else comes in and outbids you
  • makes you depend on a few keyword sources of traffic.

With the latest “think with Google” trend report on auto shoppers in the US (July 2016) they found a number of keywords that were highlighting an intent to buy without using the main keywords such as car loans or car finance. These have been put into three broad categories.

We have added in a few keywords under each one to give you some ideas… Do notice these are all long tail keywords or question based search queries.

Which car is best?

  • When is the best time to buy a new car
  • What is the best new car to buy
  • What is the best SUV

Is it right for me?

  • What car should I buy
  • What is a hybrid car
  • What kind of car should I buy

Where should I buy it?

  • What time do car dealers close
  • Where is the nearest X dealership
  • What car dealerships are open today

So these are not people specifically looking for finance, but you can see these people are on the journey. It is at this point you could be targeting them at a lower cost and get your message in front of them before they get to a dealership.

This suggests you should be doing a number of things to attract people at this early stage in the journey.

  1. engage with them – set up PPC campaigns around these touchpoints
  2. if they are not ready to buy a car there and then, get them into a retargeting campaign where you remind them of your offers during the research process . You might be able to run retargeting on motoring sites such as ebaymotors, motors.co.uk, autotrader and others…
  3. give them a reason to connect with you or get them on your email list – offers, downloads, a free guide, discount codes etc.
  4. on the SEO front – you should be writing lots more FAQs and knowledge based content to try and get your site ranking naturally for these terms. This again with drive more traffic and at a lower cost as they will be less competitive than the major car finance terms.
